July Board Meeting Highlights

Each month the North Cedar School Board shares a few highlights of our monthly board meetings. These takeaways are messages that the board collectively feels are important for the public to know. Here are the highlights from the July 18, 2022 regular meeting:

  1. Land Purchase for Ag Program. The district finalized the purchase of the land near the elementary school in Mechanicsville. The five-acre plot is being used by FFA and ag students as a hands-on classroom. Earlier this year, students planted soybeans, alfalfa and sweet corn. The acquisition was made possible thanks to an affordable purchase price from the Mechanicsville Economic Development Company.
  2. School Safety. Planning to keep students safe is an ongoing and evolving process. Leaders are currently updating the district’s safety plan. The board discussed an emergency planning app that’s presently in use to assist staff, law enforcement and first responders in the event of an emergency. The board also approved the purchase of two-way radios for staff to improve daily and emergency communication.
  3. Meal Assistance. District families are reminded that assistance for school lunches is available through the Free and Reduced Price Meals/Milk program. Meals for all students were free the past two years during the pandemic. The federal program has not been renewed for the coming school year. The application and income guidelines for the meal assistance program are available on the North Cedar website.
